Passengers wait for help in a cabin aboard the stricken ferry Sewol before it sank off the southwestern coast of South Korea on Wednesday.

Almost 300 people were unaccounted for early Wednesday after the ferry capsized and sank.

Almost 20 helicopters and more than 30 navy and coast guard vessels were involved in a rescue operation, a government official told Reuters.
