Star Trek icon Nichelle Nichols passes away from natural causes
01:42
Nichelle Nichols broke barriers in Hollywood during the 1960s, playing Lieutenant Nyota Uhura in the original Star Trek series. She became the first Black woman cast in a major role on primetime TV and made more history with the first interracial kiss on TV with costar William Shatner. Though she originally planned on leaving after the first season, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. convinced her otherwise. Nichols was a NASA recruiter inspiring generations of women and minorities to join the astronaut corps.July 31, 2022
