Three European Union foreign ministers left Kiev on Thursday without seeing President Viktor Yanukovich after violence between police and protesters exploded.

"They have left. They did not see the president for security reasons," a diplomatic source told Reuters.

The three ministers - from Poland, Germany and France - had been due to see Yanukovich in efforts to promote a political compromise to the crisis convulsing the country, now in its third month.
