Antiquated system hampers FDA in tracking deadly E. coli outbreaks
There are now more E. coli illnesses caused by vegetables like romaine and leafy greens than any other food group. There have been eight outbreaks since 2017, sickening more than 500 and killing six people. A Boston Globe/NBC News collaboration found the FDA often struggles to trace the source of food contamination back to a single farm with certainty.
